ARTICLE SUMMARY: The term “design” covers a lot of disciplines, to numerous to list here.
All these design disciplines have a lot in common, and one of the biggest thing is the fear of being wrong. Let’s face it, nobody wants to be wrong. The last thing anybody wants is the finger pointed at them and told it’s your fault, what happened.
“Design is the art of being wrong safely” by Pavel Samsonov is a good look at that fear of being wrong and why we need to get past that fear. He talks about
- Why call it design?
- Design outputs are not design outcomes
- Designing design culture
There is a big difference between the mind set of designers and developers.
Designers use feedback as they tackle a problem and work towards a solution going through many iterations before the problem is defined, clearly understood and solved. Once the problem is solved, then it’s given to the client.
Developers on the other hand spend a little bit of time producing something, then see whether it works, gets it to the customer and after that uses that information to shape the next version.
There is a lot to learn from this article for both designers and developers and well worth reading.
