ARTICLE SUMMARY: It never fails, does not matter what industry you’re in, a new technology comes along and it’s going to kill the business and be the end of the world. I suspect that the design industry is more prone to this way of thinking more than other industries.
There are a lot of differing opinions on how AI is going to impact life as a whole. Whether it’s Bill Gates talking about a two-day workweek, designers predicting the end of creatives, or others arguing that AI will free up time so creatives can be even more creative, it’s going to be interesting.
In Chris R Becker’s “Keep Making (AI will not save you),” he looks at both sides of the AI coin and gives us practical suggestions on how to move forward in the Artificial Intelligence era.
- Creativity (with and without AI) is practiced
- Keep a maker’s mindset
- The AI Making Paradox
As a whole, designers work with their hands. An idea comes to them, and from there it takes off. They pull out a sketch pad and pencil and start drawing—thinking visually helps them solve the problem that they are focusing on .
Conceptual skills, strategic thinking, decision-making, vision, leadership, problem-solving, and innovation are just as relevant when guiding AI to help us make decisions. Designers need to remember that AI can mimic, but it cannot think—the very thing that gives designers their value.
All these AI tools are nothing more than that, tools. As Chris Becker says, “these tools are execution tools, and whether they are assisted by AI or not is inconsequential because, fundamentally, they are empty vessels looking for the input of a thinking, caring maker to bring them to life.”
